Nice to Meet You

My name is Al, and I’m the guy behind The Modern Barkeep — a place where good drinks, good stories, and a bit of humor all share the same barstool.

I first stepped into the hospitality business back in high school and college, drawn in by the energy, the people, and as a student, the paycheck. I eventually chose a different career path, but it seems the enjoyment of hospitality never really left me. Years later, with more life experience (and more gray in the beard), it was time to jump back in — this time as a side hustle and a possible post‑career chapter. When I returned, I wondered why I didn't come back sooner. Since then, I've worked in a tavern, a wing joint, and a Mexican restaurant.

Every shift teaches me something new: a technique I hadn’t tried, a cocktail variation I hadn’t considered, or a fresh reminder of how wildly different people are. Bartending is equal parts craft and connection, and I’ve come to greatly enjoy both.

A temporary few months away from the bar gave me time to reflect on the barkeep role. That pause is what sparked this project. The Modern Barkeep is my way of sharing what I’ve learned, continuing to learn from others, and building a space for anyone who loves the art of mixing a great drink — whether you’re behind a bar, in front of a kitchen counter, or just curious.

I’m also a dad of three, which means two things:

• I’ve mastered the art of multitasking. Well, somewhat.
